Teacher Training

At Summerbridge Cambridge, we believe that:

Learning happens best when everyone is a student. Since all our teachers attend high school or college themselves, our students see their own learning, questioning and effort mirrored in their teachers. Everyone is motivated and curious; no one is an expert.

High school and college students can and should “own the program.” Leadership opportunities abound at Summerbridge Cambridge. Our young teachers shape all the elements of a small school from classes to scheduling, family support to field trips!

Teachers learn by teaching. Our teachers perform almost all the tasks of professional educators. They teach single-handedly, implement curricula, create course plans, assign and assess homework, mentor students, conduct family conferences, and more.

Everyone needs a mentor. Summerbridge Cambridge hires professional educators to act as “mentor teachers” and to share curriculum ideas, observe classes and provide feedback. Mentor teachers offer supportive eyes and ears to our teachers as they experience the roller coaster of first-time teaching.

Teacher thinking is a powerful tool. Summerbridge Cambridge asks teachers challenging questions and gives them a context to reflect. Teachers discuss educational issues in depth during training and professional development sessions. At the end of each summer, teachers write Philosophies of Education and share Presentations of Learning with the community. To read excerpts, click here.

To build community in their classrooms, teachers need it themselves. Our teachers become each other’s advocates and support systems. The program cultivates collegiality through meetings and discussions, but also through staff dinners, positive recognition, program rituals, and silliness, celebration and fun!
