Paths to College: Program Overview

Once students are admitted to Summerbridge Cambridge, their two or three-year experience in the program includes:

  •  A six-week intensive summer program before their sixth and seventh grade years, with the option to return for the eighth grade program

  •  Academic and personal follow-up and support through our advocacy program

  •  Field trips and special events

The summer program fuels intellectual excitement and builds key academic skills. Students take classes in math and literature, and choose from academic electives such as Exploring Chinatown, Natural Disasters, Van Gogh, and the Chemistry of Cake. Students receive academic reinforcement through a daily Homework Hut and personal support from their advisors. A daily assembly creates community and fosters public speaking and performance.

The eighth grade program focuses on leadership development and community service learning. Students undertake a summer-long service project with a local agency and learn about the issues at stake. They grow to become leaders in the Summerbridge Cambridge community and gain the self-confidence and independence necessary for high school success.

Summerbridge Cambridge continues the spirit and community of the summer through an after-school program. Running for two ten-week semesters, the after-school program features innovative academic classes and field trips. In one unit, students visited the John Hancock Tower to learn about the physics of skyscrapers, then put it into practice by building towers with ordinary household materials. Project like these ask students to extend and apply what they learn in their public schools.

We created the advocacy program in 2004 to create closer links with the Cambridge Public Schools and with our students’ families. Each student is assigned a full-time staff member, who follows his/her progress in school and provides extra help and tutoring if necessary.

Summerbridge Cambridge offers field trips weekly in the summer and monthly during the school year. In recent years, students have visited local museums, performed on stage at the re-opening of the Longfellow House, sat in the locker rooms at Fenway Park, completed all 20 miles of the Walk for Hunger, and more!
