Admissions

Attention Cambridge Public School fifth graders: do you love to learn? Do you want to go to college? Do you want to meet new friends from all over the city? If so, Summerbridge Cambridge could be the place for you!

Each winter, Summerbridge Cambridge recruits in every fifth grade classroom in the Cambridge Public Schools. We hand out applications and tell students about our program ? the fun classes, the young teachers, and yes, the homework in the summer! (For a copy of the 2008 student application, click click HERE.) After turning in an application, students and families are invited for interviews to learn more about the program and share more about themselves. All admissions decisions will be made by early April.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do students apply?

Students apply to SBC during the spring of their fifth grade year. Students from any Cambridge Public School, or from Banneker Charter School, are eligible. During January, February, and March of 2008, SBC staff will visit every fifth grade classroom in these schools to describe the program and pass out applications. The application includes a student information form, student essays, a parent section, and a teacher feedback form, as well as grades and standardized test scores. All students will then be contacted for an in-person interview, which will take place on March 29th and April 5th. To find out more about SBC, students and families are invited to attend an informal Open House, where they can enjoy refreshments, view photos, and speak to SBC students, teachers, parents, and staff.
When and where are the Open Houses?

Tues, Jan. 29, 5:30 - 7:30 pm @ Kennedy Longfellow School, 159 Spring Street Thurs, Jan 31, 5:30 - 7:30pm @ Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, 459 Broadway Wed, Feb 6, 5:30 - 7:30pm @ Peabody School, 70 Rindge Ave
What are you looking for in applicants?

Lots of factors influence which students are accepted. But above all, we're looking for kids who are motivated to attend SBC and to take advantage of the experience! Students also need to be able to make a full commitment (see below) and be willing to complete two hours of homework every night.
How long is the commitment?

Students commit to attend SBC for two years. They attend the summer program for two summers, before sixth grade and seventh grade, and attend the weekly after-school program for two years, during sixth and seventh grade. Students who successfully complete their two-year commitment are eligible to apply for an optional third summer of service learning and leadership.
What are this summer's dates?

For students, the 2008 summer program runs from June 30 - August 8, with the exception of July 4th. Family Night is July 15 and Celebration Evening is August 7. Hours are 8:20 - 3:30 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday; 8:20 - 2:15 on Wednesday. Please plan any summer trips around these dates, as it's essential that students be in attendance every day.
What happens during the school year?

During the school year, SBC students meet once a week at the Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School for the After-School Program. At the "ASP," students keep alive the community and spirit that was created during the previous summer. Students also take academic and elective classes, participate in Community Meeting, complete homework from school, and spend time with teachers and their friends from the summer. In addition, SBC program staff follow-up closely with students' academic performance at school and provide individualized support as necessary.
